Why Your Candle Doesn't Smell Strong (And How to Fix It)

You light a brand-new candle, settle in with your favourite blanket, and... nothing. Barely a hint of the scent you fell in love with. Before you assume there's something wrong with your candle, there are a few factors that can affect how well a candle fills a room with fragrance.

Here's the inside scoop from the candle makers at Deliciously Wickt on why your candle may not be smelling as strong as expected—and what you can do about it.

1. Your candle needs a full melt pool

A candle needs to burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt evenly to the edges of the jar. This is called a full melt pool, and it's essential for achieving the best scent throw.

As a general rule, allow your candle to burn for approximately one hour per inch of candle diameter. If you're extinguishing it after only an hour, the fragrance may not have had enough time to disperse throughout the room.

2. The room may be too large

Room size has a significant impact on how strong a candle smells.

A single candle may perform beautifully in a bedroom, office, or bathroom but struggle to fill a large open-concept space. If you're testing a new candle, try it in a smaller room first to get a better sense of its fragrance performance.

3. Trim your wick before every burn

A wick that's too long can cause a candle to burn hotter and faster than intended.

For the best burn and scent throw, trim your wick to approximately ¼ inch before each use. This helps create a cleaner burn and allows the candle to perform as designed.

4. Airflow can affect scent throw

Fans, air vents, and open windows can quickly disperse fragrance before it has a chance to build up in the room.

If your candle doesn't seem very strong, try moving it to an area with less airflow and see if you notice a difference.

5. Understand the difference between wax types

Soy candles often produce a more subtle and natural scent throw than paraffin candles.

While some candles are designed to create an intense fragrance experience, our goal at Deliciously Wickt is to create a balanced scent that enhances your space without becoming overwhelming. A quality soy candle should be noticeable, inviting, and comfortable to enjoy for hours.

6. Give your nose a chance to reset

One of the most common mistakes people make is standing directly over a newly lit candle and expecting an immediate burst of fragrance.

When a candle is first lit, you'll often notice the flame more than the scent. Give it time to develop a full melt pool, then leave the room for a few minutes and return. The change in environment helps reset your sense of smell and allows you to experience the fragrance the way a guest entering your home would.

The Bottom Line

If your candle doesn't smell as strong as you'd like, the solution is often simple: allow it to develop a full melt pool, trim the wick regularly, place it away from drafts, and give the fragrance time to fill the room.

With a little patience and proper candle care, you'll get the best possible scent throw from your favourite soy candle—and your home will smell amazing.
